Asphalt - A brownish-black solid or semisolid mixture of bitumens obtained from native deposits or as a petroleum byproduct, used in paving, roofing, and waterproofing. Mixed asphalt and crushed stone gravel or sand, used for paving or roofing. It is also known as "flexible pavement."
Asphalt Base - refers to the sub-base layer of an asphalt roadway. Generally consisting of larger grade aggregate, spread and compacted to provide a stable base for further layers of aggregates or asphalt pavement.
Blacktop - Slang term referring to road-surfacing material: a road-surfacing material bound together with a tarry substance such as asphalt.
Compaction - the compression of particles to make a dense mass, or the compressed state of the resulting mass.
